Sahajanand Medical Technologies (SMT) has received regulatory approval in Egypt for its Supraflex Cruz™ Sirolimus Eluting Stent System, marking an important expansion of the Indian medical technology company’s coronary intervention portfolio into the Egyptian market.
The announcement was shared by SMT through its official LinkedIn page and reported through a company-issued announcement. According to the announcement, approval has been granted by the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), Central Administration of Medical Devices, enabling physicians in Egypt to access the Supraflex Cruz coronary stent platform.
SMT Expands Its Coronary Intervention Presence in Africa
The Egyptian approval represents another step in SMT’s international expansion strategy and strengthens its presence across African healthcare markets.
The Egyptian Drug Authority is responsible for regulating and monitoring the quality, effectiveness and safety of pharmaceutical products and medical devices in the country. Its regulatory framework includes a dedicated Central Administration of Medical Devices, which oversees medical-device-related regulatory activities.
For SMT, the approval provides an opportunity to make its coronary stent technology available to interventional cardiologists in Egypt, where cardiovascular disease continues to represent a significant healthcare challenge.
According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, ischaemic heart disease was among the leading causes of death in Egypt in 2021, with an estimated mortality rate of 129.3 deaths per 100,000 population across both sexes.
Supraflex Cruz™: Sirolimus-Eluting Coronary Stent Technology
Supraflex Cruz is a sirolimus-eluting coronary stent designed around an ultra-thin strut platform and biodegradable polymer technology.
According to SMT’s product information, the stent uses a proprietary blend of biodegradable polymers and incorporates sirolimus at a drug dose of 1.4 μg/mm². The company states that nearly 80% of the drug is released within the first month, with the remaining drug designed to be released over approximately three months.
The platform also incorporates SMT’s proprietary LDZ link, which the company says is designed to improve flexibility, push-force transmission, radial strength and resistance to longitudinal compression. Its open-cell design is intended to support flexibility and side-branch access during coronary interventions.
These design characteristics are particularly relevant in percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), where device deliverability, lesion access and stent deployment are important considerations for interventional cardiologists.
Clinical Evidence Supporting the Supraflex Platform
The Supraflex family has been evaluated through multiple clinical studies.
The TALENT trial, a prospective, multicentre randomised study, compared the Supraflex sirolimus-eluting stent with the Xience everolimus-eluting stent in an all-comer population undergoing PCI. The trial enrolled 1,435 patients across 23 European centres. The published three-year analysis reported that Supraflex was non-inferior to Xience for the study’s device-oriented composite endpoint at 12 months.
Additional evidence has been generated through the Cruz HBR Registry, which evaluated Supraflex Cruz in 1,203 patients across 26 European centres, including patients at high bleeding risk. The registry reported a 12-month device-oriented composite endpoint rate of 5.8% across the overall cohort and concluded that PCI using Supraflex Cruz was associated with favourable clinical outcomes in the studied population.
SMT has also reported newer clinical data from studies including TUXEDO-II and Multivessel TALENT, further contributing to the clinical evidence surrounding the platform.
What the Egypt Approval Means for SMT
The Egyptian regulatory approval gives SMT an opportunity to expand the availability of its coronary intervention technology in a major North African healthcare market.
It also adds to the company’s broader international footprint. SMT states that it exports its products to more than 75 countries as of March 31, 2025, while its portfolio spans vascular and structural heart intervention.
With the approval of Supraflex Cruz in Egypt, SMT is extending its reach beyond its existing markets while continuing to build its international presence in interventional cardiology.
For Egyptian healthcare professionals, the development introduces another coronary stent platform into the country’s medical-device ecosystem. For SMT, it represents a regulatory and commercial milestone as the company continues its global expansion in cardiovascular medical technology.
